Canon EOS 90D Specifications Review and Price

The Canon EOS 90D is a mid-range DSLR that succeeds the 3.5-year-old Canon EOS 80D and sits between the EOS 77D and the EOS 7D Mark II (yes, it still exists). It gets a new higher-resolution sensor with exceptional Raw image quality, as well as live view AF (with eye detect) and 4K video capture, all in a familiar package.

The 90D is the DSLR version of the mirrorless EOS M6 Mark II, which was released at the same time. Because the specifications are nearly equal, it appears that Canon is allowing potential consumers to pick between a midsize DSLR with an optical viewfinder and more physical controls and a smaller and lighter mirrorless model with a removable electronic finder. The differences in native lens lineups between the EF and M mounts, of course, may appeal to various sorts of customers.

Features to look for:

  • APS-C CMOS sensor with 32.5 Megapixels.
  • Autofocus with dual pixels (live view/video).
  • All-cross-type AF with 45 points (through the viewfinder).
  • Face detection on a 220k-pixel metering sensor.
  • Burst shooting at 7 frames per second with continuous autofocus.
  • 3″ touchscreen display with full articulation.
  • 100 percent coverage optical viewfinder
  • Capture of 4K/30p video without cropping.
  • Micro USB connector with USB 2.0 port
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both available.

Design

While the external design of the 90D doesn’t deviate significantly from that of the 80D, the new camera’s internals are substantially different, as we’ll see on the next page.

Performance

The new camera has the same 45-point cross-type AF technology as the 80D when it comes to focus points. However, while utilizing the camera’s viewfinder, a new 220,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor (the 80D has a 7,560-pixel one) adds facial detection and can be used for both stills and video. When using the 90D’s Intelligent Tracking and Recognition Autofocus (iTR AF) feature, Face Detect is enabled automatically.

When utilizing Live View, Canon’s excellent Dual Pixel CMOS AF is available, which covers about 100% of the frame vertically and 88 percent horizontally, with a whopping 5,481 AF points to pick from manually. The joystick on the right of the display, which allows for better precision when selecting a focus point, is another feature that makes this system enjoyable to use. The camera doesn’t quite equal the low-light performance of Canon’s full-frame mirrorless cameras, but it will function well in all but the most extreme lighting circumstances.

Battery

When using the viewfinder, the 90D uses the LP-E6N battery used in several of Canon’s other DSLRs, and it has a CIPA certification (which is the industry standard) of 1,300 shots. When using Live View (or the back display), the battery life drops to 450 photos, which is still impressive when compared to most mirrorless cameras.

Canon offers the BG-E14 grip for use with the 90D if you want the security of a longer battery life.

Availability and Price

A variety of kits are available for the 90D. The cost of the body alone is $1199. The package costs $1349 when purchased with the EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, and $1599 when purchased with the more flexible EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. It is available in Nigerian outlets from N700,000 to N850,000.
